Welcome to the 40mm wargaming board as requested by a couple of people who are also interested in smaller size wargaming...

Might I request a rules board for "A Gentleman's War", a popular toy soldier ruleset.

40mm is the new 54mm, only joking. Good chance for us who like the scale to share our plans and encourage others to dip a toe is this emerging scale.

In Pound store playsets over time, 54mm has become the new 40mm or 42mm or 45mm ...

interesting it feels like a "meet you in the middle' scale 28mm has recently crept up to 32mm. I can see the appeal but I'm too entrenched for another scale atm

Before I got waylaid by an army chaplain and wargames proprietor I was all set to change over fully from 25mm/15mm to 40mm as I felt it was an excellent compromise-the figures have almost the same footprint as 28mm but still have the impact of 54mm. Also they are cheaper (when comparing metal prices). Although I ended up collecting some of my favourite periods in 54mm I aim to use 40mm for niche periods such as 16th C Tudor and late 17th C Sedgemoor etc.

Images of Irregular's 42mm Balkans plus a few "see how easy it is!" blog articles on sculpting and casting one's own figures have blended in my mind with this book, and I now have a dreadful urge to model the many Syldavian / Bordurian wars from 1899 to 1937...

Really look forward to seeing your project. Can you tell us more? At this stage, there's nothing much to tell; "The Wars of Tintin" (it'll do for a title for now), are the merest glimmer in my mind's eye for the moment. But going through my copy of King Ottokar's Sceptre revealed a great many ideas for uniforms, both those suitable for the 1930's and other, 'dressier' styles of a fashion more suited to the turn of last century. Surprised to note that quite a few regiments in both conflicts marched to war in their dress uniforms (or elements thereof, such as tunics), which gives some justification to add colour and dash to the ranks of Russian green and khaki. Reading up on the Balkan Wars and the Russo-Polish War of 1920 has given me a great deal of inspiration, too. And 42mm makes the provision of armoured cars and tankettes reasonably practical; Close enough to 1/43 scale for the recruitment of diecasts in that size. I'm thinking I'll start by sculpting 2 infantry figures and 1 cavalryman per side, all with 'plug in' heads and arms, with options to provide different headwear and armaments. I'm a digital sculptor, but I am eager to try sculpting these in more 'traditional' media, and see how I go. If this project ever genuinely lifts off the launchpad, I'll start a thread here, and document my progress. But, I'd advise interested parties to not hold their collective breath!

Great ideas ,would work well with the Portable Wargame rules. I use them for some interwar gaming using old Britains figures and some tanks in 54mm. 40mm would be terrific with tankettes, bicyclists, cavalry etc. 1/72 planes would work well for air cover.

You should definitely check out the Tin Soldiering On blog (https://tonystoysoldiers.blogspot.com/) then, as he has some great 40mm Balkans imagi-nations armies and games.

I have begun to look at Prince August 40mm mould castings of Cork. I was wondering if any members have cast these 40mm figures and what their views were on them. They seem to have an old Tricorn range and a newer SYW range. There seems to be a difference in the roundness of the two different types but I may be mistaken. I have in the past (over twenty years ago) casted their 25mm figures but not very well. As I'm moving up from my 28mm Tricorn and down from 54mm, 40mm seems a good way to go. May fit in with my 28mm buildings as well. My aim is to build two large image nations to fight each other and PA range seems extensive for my purpose. Any thoughts on the matter would be helpful before I commit my money. Many thanks
