As I stated on Facebook (and have also asked on TMP) the location of the Signifer/Aquilifer is uncertain - at least to me. I've seen numerous statements that they were in the front rank, presumably the center. The only problem, for me, being that the quote often used to support this seems to be from the early Republic, perhaps even pre-Republic. There may be later sources, I don't know. I just keep seeing the same quote over and over again. This is meant to be an Early Imperial legion so I am not sure if the statement still holds true.
There is also a question of where the Eagle would be, regardless of where the Signifer stands. Does the Aquilifer replace the Signifer in one of the Centuries? Or does the eagle stand behind the ranks with the Optio?
Anybody point me to some good sources? I have Phil Barker's excellent WRG book "The Armies and enemies of Imperial Rome" . I've been looking at the Osprey book on Roman Centurians from the period. And I believe they also have a book about standards. Anybody seen these up close? There is also an OOP book about Roman Tactics.
3mm MDF bases 5" x 4". Centurian front rank, 1st file. Optio (2IC) behind the ranks, keeping order and discipline, Musician behind the ranks, Signifer shown here behind the ranks, Aquilifer shown in middle of front rank. Tessare (sp?) (i.e. Sergeant-Major) would be front rank, left hand file.
This is based on what I can work out so far in my research. Maybe I should switch the Signifer and Aquilifer? The Aquilifer would be with the first cohort, presumably with the 1st century. Would that century also have a Signifer? Would the other cohorts have Vexilla? XForce doesn't make an Imagifer to the best of my knowledge, but I've seen them in metal. I assume that would stand with the Legate commanding the legion.
Can anybody provide any insight or comment?
