I am intrigued by the size of games that people are playing in 54mm:
small skirmish where 1 figure=1 man, larger skirmish or mass battle?

These things are always tricky, I have played in and run 1:1 skirmish games but they were always someone else's project that I was contributing to rather than something I would normally do so I didn't click that option.

I use Bob Cordery's PORTABLE WARGAME rules.

The only skirmish games I've played with 54mm are the Airfix Battles scenarios with Mike. Otherwise it's always mass battle (I count TSATF games as mass battle).

I haven't played a 54mm game yet-I'm still building up my armies (I have to paint both sides!!!!).
However, I'm keen to play fairly big battles.
I'm painting 60mm Macedonian/Persians forces from Expeditionary Force, hoping to have about about 16 Macedonian units and about 20+ Persian units. I've been attracted to Dirk Donvil's About Caesar rules, so that'll be 8 figures per foot and 4 figures per horse.
I'm also painting Victrix 54mm French and British Peninsular War figures. Again I'm attracted to About Bonaparte rules, but may also try All The King's Men. At the moment I'm using 10 figures for British infantry and 12 figures for French infantry, and 8 figures per cavalry unit, although that may change if I adopt through Dirk Donvil rules and use 8 and 4 figures as for the Ancients ranges.
So I hope that does class as a large scale battle? Any comments/help much appreciated.

I use a home-brewed ruleset heavily influenced by FUBAR and One Page Rules with a 1:1 scale. My most recent battle was ~company-sized with 5-6 infantry squads of 5-10 men and about 5 vehicles per side.
I'm also experimenting with a FIW skirmish ruleset with about 20-40 figures a side.

If you count 1 man versus 1 man as small one man to one man skirmish, I still use the Donald Featherstone medieval foot slogging or jousting rules, and his duelling rules (based on rules by Gerald De Gru) as set out in his "wargaming in bed" in his book Solo Wargaming.
If you count 1:1 as a figure ratio, this is what I play at 54mm and all scales down to 15mm and all sizes of skirmish / battle. Nothing else seems right ...
Usually using versions of Donald Featherstone's Close Wars (his FIW / native vs. troops skirmish appendix to War Games 1962) for small scale battles, this is usually 25 figures etc each side. So for me it is hardly mass battles.

I'm a Nap gamer and use Too Fat Lardies "Sharp Practice" rules - games end up being around 40-60 figures per side. They "kind of" represent 1 model = 1 man although in the rule book they state that this is "elastic" - they can take a sort of "Hollywood" approach where 50 men on screen can equal a battalion anyway!

I tend to play larger skirmish or mass battle games - haven't really played any 1:1 games with 54mm.
This will change when I (finally) get the Magnificent Seven project painted and ready...

In a fit of nostalgia I built up two WW2 armies for Germans and British, using Neil Thomas OHW as a guideline. I deliberately chose to paint them toy soldier style so as a result I now have about 30 men a side plus mortars, a troop of three tanks a side and an artillery park of old die-cast Cannon. I like to use Bob C's rules with NT scenarios.

So far Mike and I have only used the Airfix Battles rules for 54mm WW2 but I'd like to try Bob's rules for that period too.

Oh they are just the best. I'm just waiting for the weather to improve so I can play in my barn with the new rules in his book.

I am intrigued by the size of games that people are playing in 54mm: small skirmish where 1 figure=1 man, larger skirmish or mass battle? I always start out thinking I will only collect enough for a dozen per side skirmish, but, somehow, it ends up with around 100 figures per side for AWI, ACW, Napoleonic, Foreign Legion, Plains Wars, Northwest Frontier of India, Zulu and my latest folly: The Sepoy Mutiny of 1857. I am still looking for the perfect set of rules.

I've played the Rorke's Drift game by Steve Winter with 120 Zulus and 50 Britishs. Also, I have used Steve's "Two Page Skirmish" rules where I one player can easily handle from 5 to 10 figures easily. I run this with my wargaming group with an average of 8- 10 participants. Both games probably fit into the large skirmish category.
