Here is version 1.0 of the rules I am planning for use with my Lohwand Campaign. It's a two page cheat sheet (front and back) which has almost all the rules. There are a few I couldn't fit on, and there are probably some I don't realize I have forgotten - being "too close" to the project. lohwand.blogspot.com/2020/09/lohwand-armatura-v10.htmlAt the end of August I discovered Osprey was running a sale on ebooks and PDFs, general histories and rules only, and I took advantage of that to pick some up. At the same time I bought a full price book on the Roman Legionary of the early empire. This book referenced some Latin terms when describing the period sources and when analyzing Trajan's Column. Armatura is one of the terms. Virtis, Disciplina, and Labor are three others. As I was reading it occurred to me that these three latter terms might form the basis for a set of simple rules. Armatura is the result, though as I point out on my blog, it draws heavily on A Band of Joyous Heroes, my Tekumel skirmish rules. Howard

Almost immediately having posted I released I had left out huge chunks, either by negligence or because I had "assumed" how it would be done. (I've typically use card activation for my games.) And it wouldn't fit on the sheet anyhow! So I resolved to make some changes, the first being to increase the sheet size to Tabloid (11" x 17"). Here is the updated, expanded and revised first page... I'm still working on page 2.

Some more thoughts on the card activation system, recognizing that Aces can be high card or low card, and adding nuances based on suit. LINK <<<

Version 3.0 of the Cheat Sheet. I have already spotted yet another revision! And in this one I correct the erroneous way I had of referring to "court" cards as "suit" cards. That must have caused some raised eyebrows or scratching of heads. Explanation HERE <<<

Still on the front of the sheet, some minor edits to wording and a couple of Command Activation additions...

I didn't see it on the blog but do you have the Special Event cards already worked out?

I didn't see it on the blog but do you have the Special Event cards already worked out? No. On the one hand there are a lot of generic events that are always used, and then there are those that are specific to scenarios, or periods. A friend of mine has run a number of well researched mini-campaigns, like the Siege of Louisburg, or events from the '45 or similar. As they are campaigns and are based on historical events he includes a lot things that actually happened but which may or may not occur in the played campaign. I recall one card that was for some distant occurrence, but which had the effect that now you had to complete the siege two weeks sooner, or something like that. What I was thinking was having some generic events and then others based on things that happened to the cultures that my armies are proxying. So things that happened during Roman campaigns for my Tharkallan Empire campaigns, Ancient Egypt for Stygia, etc.

Nice, I like that idea of taking historical events as inspiration.

Rules intended for use with my Lohwand fantasy campaign: LohwandLatest post: /quote/ Here is the latest iteration of my Armatura rules, version 5.0, though as you can see I need to do some more edits. (I got confused as to how many versions I had made and discarded.) Some changes to both front and back. For one thing, I changed the rules for Army Morale. I realised I was referencing rules that were not on the sheet, which kind of defeated the "all-the-rules-on-the-cheat-sheet" objective. It possibly fails that in other ways; I need to vet it again to be sure. I also changed a couple of the Command Actions, and have gone through and made sure that I used the same format for abbreviations throughout. The morale test has changed as I finally realized that it didn't need to be an opposed test, and was probably better that it wasn't. I've tried to add a mechanism to allow the Saxon Fryd to pursue fleeing (retiring) Normans out of their formation. Not sure yet if it works. And I'm thinking that Staff Slings probably should only have a ROF of 1. Under Armatura each unit, be it a cohort, squadron or warband, has three primary traits: Virtis, Disciplina and Labor. Virtis is its combat ability, Disciplina represents discipline and morale, and Labor is the unit's engineering skill. A unit may also be designated as having an Exceptional Leader. There is assumed to be an overall commander, with sub-commanders in charge of left and right wings, and any reserve. Commanders have another trait called the Tactics Rating. (I tried to find the latin translation. I thought it would be "Tactica" but it seems not to be the case. Or maybe my Google-Fu is weak!) This rating determines the number of cards in their hand. It is assumed all officers have the rating, but it is only determined when relevant. i.e. if a centurion were promoted to command a detachment. I need to sort out the "Well Led" and "Exceptional Leader" designations b/c I notice they are overlapping somewhat. /end quote/
