Played a lovely game of Charge! using a grid and the dice mechanics for shooting/melee from The Men Who Would Be Kings. Did not use any dice system for activations at all which was really refreshing. There's a certain "you are in control so don't screw it up and put your guys in the wrong place" dynamic that's really quite dramatic! I made the board setup and deployment based on the battle of Isted from the first Schleswig War (1848-50). Because the same figures keep getting used and are so distinctive its pretty easy to link it to the previous game - across Europe and backwards in time I guess (last game was in Austria in 1866). Thanks, Ross! I'm a little concerned whether I'll ever get back to my 28mm stuff at the rate I'm going!

Spencer,, I admire your fearless ability to cut and paste bits and pieces together from rules sets you like. I have been scared stiff to try it myself. I ask myself: Why? Worst case, you play an off balance game or two. Your posts are encouraging me to attempt to write my own version of my own impossible dream: the perfect colonial set of rules.
Many thanks! Nick

I would say having hosted games for multiple players almost monthly for a few years (at least up til January) gives you more confidence to tinker with rules. You just gotta watch the players - when someone is always make stinky diaper faces when certain rules come into play, perhaps that rule should be targeted for some revisions!

What a splendid scene! Yes, I'm wary about investing too much in scales other than 40/54mm too.
