I'm currently running a fantasy campaign with a roughly ancient/medieval/early horse and musket or Renaissance feel. We have some rules for taking prisoners. For example if the commander is killed a dice roll occurs to determine army reaction. On a 1 the army either flees or surrenders, The mechanism for which choice is still being developed. For example would a larger army which lost its commander really surrender. In the scenario just run a wizard's magical comet (courtesy of GW rules but must be a mini one like a mini nuke) kills the commander at a point when his army was thrashing the enemy. We rolled to see if the army surrendered or fled and I rolled surrender. I am now walking that back to say forward units surrender and the rest flee. The psychological factors are a powerful magic attack and loss of leader. In addition I am saying the surrendering mounted archers, being mercenaries, would switch sides. Three cannon are also captured. The victor probably has enough gunners to distribute them around the captured cannons.
That brings me to the next point, with captured cannons and depleted crews. Will captured gunners be forced to fight for captors and how is it decided? Can gun crews enlist infantrymen or even cavalrymen? How will it affect gun shooting? At present guns get to shoot every second move. Would a mixed crew be unaffected and what about all other service crew?
Next point is treatment of POWs. In reality it was very grim in ancient through medieval periods, especially for rank and file and rebels.. Later periods got better with rules for looking after prisoners. In the recent scenario the victorious commander is rated 80% kind, which suggests he might actually feed and shelter prisoners but perhaps only on half rations. How many guards are required? Is movement halved? Are they taken to another map hex? etc. Thoughts?
