I haven't got very far with my 54mm ECW: Those 4 test figures are the total managed so far... But I have been contemplating rules. I am thinking of starting with File Leader as it would mean using trays of 6 figures, with 3 trays making up an infantry unit - not a huge number to try and achieve. I have used Forlorn Hope in the past and really enjoyed the games but find it too slow and fiddly to play now... What other rules are people using?

Mike, I have a set of ECW rules called 'About Cromwell' by Dirk Donvil. They are specifically for 54mm and 40mm figures and are based on the Command and Colours system. Cavalry units are usually 4 figures and infantry units 12 figures. I obviously haven't played them yet but we could give them a go when we have the figures ready. When I get my pikemen painted up later this year I will have 24 pike, 48 musket, 24 cavalry and two guns.

Sounds good - I did see that someone is playtesting a To the Strongest variant for ECW (which might get me to try them - their games seemed to lack the clutter I disliked in pictures of To the Strongest Ancients)...

I used 'Victory Without Quarter' with some house adjustments to account for figure basing and scale. Results can be check out here: petiteguerre.blogspot.com/2009/03/second-game.html . Nice looking CtA figures. That line is what originally brought me into 54mm gaming.

That looks like an excellent game. I've looked at VWQ but never played them.

Mike,
I have been working on an ECW project off and on for about 15 years. I have not decided on a rules set. I noticed on the Funny Little Wars thread that you are preparing to have more heads sculpted. Would you consider doing some cavalier style (broad brimmed soft hat) heads that match up with the A Call to Arms figures. That would really help add some variety. Currently all of my horsemen are in helmets. I use some Replicants as well but their cost prevents me from doing full units of them.

Hi. The "To the Strongest" rules are, I believe, in the final stages of play testing and Simon is gathering all reports together for the final draft. Hopefully they'll be ready soon.
Also, has anyone seen the Battle for Britain series published by Helion? They're 28mm paper armies, with art work by Peter Dennis, and one of the books is available for the ECW. The point in mentioning this is that there are some rules (fast play) at the back of the book written by Andy Callan. There are also some rules for absolute beginners to the period.
I have this book, and it is very good. The art work is amazing and, although I'm not an expert, I thought the rules read well.
Best Wishes Dave

Hi Dave,
That's great news! I have just bought the copy of Miniature Wargames that has the Memoir 44-based ECW rules in it but I haven't read them yet. You will be pleased to know that Mike and I are giving To the Strongest another go at the Guildford Club on Monday evening.
Cheers Anthony

Hi Anthony,
I've also just got the mag and a quick glance at the ECW article looks really good. Although I don't do ECW it's things like the Battle for Britain books and the articles in mags that sometimes lead me down yet another Wargaming route!!!!
Good luck with your TtS game next week. Hope you manage to sort out the niggles and have a really good game. Perhaps I'm biased, but I really enjoy them. They're now my Ancient rules set of choice (I'm too old now to be reading through rules for that perfect set. TtS seem to be that set for me).
However, I must admit that I'm going to try "About Caesar" for my 54mm games and I'm going to get the "About Cromwell" set you mentioned earlier. I didn't know they existed. I have to say I like Dirk's other rules very much.

Hello chaps. I'm new to the board, but have been lurking about the 54mm scene for a while. I started with 54mm ECW (a period I spent years re-enacting), and decided to build the armies to refight Lansdown 1643 (my local battle), primarily to help my oldest son out with a school project. Anyway, here is the finished collection laid out. This is enough for Lansdown ,but I hope to get more done to do Edgehill. Not sure what, if any, rules I'll use with a good deal of luck these pictures will be visible to you. If not take a look at my blog here for a blow by blow account of the regiments as I painted them. link
I've started a Marlburian project in 54mm (Funny Little Wigs) and am aiming to do Dettingen too. Other pipe dreams include Dybbol 1864, Little Round Top and Waterloo. It's a great scale, and much easier on the old peepers.

Wow. Fantastic, and come just at the right time as I've just begun painting some 54mm figures with a view to raising a collection of troops and wargaming with them.
Could you please let me now the make of the troops you're using. I recognise some but wondered what make the cavalry was.
I tried the link button on your post, but it just took me back to the top of this page, so any way of linking up to read about your figures would be most welcome.
Thanks Dave

Thanks chaps. I've sorted the link out I think (I'm a techno dunce), so full details of the project are on the blog. The cavalry are almost all ACTA. Cuirassiers are Irregular Miniatures on ACTA horses, and the odd generals are Peipp, Del Prado and Airfix. The lisping cavalier heads are from Ensign Miniatures, who may be out of business now (I can't find their website). They are a bit big for the ACTA bodies but not too bad. Maros Models also did separate heads FWIW. I expect I will gloss varnish them all one day. You might be able to use some ACW Confederate heads?
