The proboards forums software which we use allows for up to 200mb of storage before you have to pay.
I increased the storage to 500mb at my own cost a while back but we have now exceeded that.
I have now increased the storage to 800mb which is costing me $6 a month.
Part of the problem is the size of attachments that people are using - I cannot limit them to less than 1mb but would ask that people PLEASE make your pictures as small as possible - preferablly something under 100kb rather than 1mb or we will run out of storage again quite quickly.
There are two options going forwards:
1) I change the forum to not allowing attachments which means people will need to host pictures on flickr or something similar and post links as a lot of other website use.
2) I ask for a donation from forum members to cover the cost of paying for attachment storage?
What do people think?

I am happy either to stick to links to save increasing attachment sizes Or A simple way to fund you.

A small fee is worth it, a voluntary one better so that we you can afford it in these times can carry it without excluding those who can't. I suppose if I explore a bit I'll figure out how to do it but perhaps a monthly note reminding members along with a mention of how?
I would suggest though that people do try to keep the file size down as not everyone has fast internet and unlimited traffic etc. (keeping in mind that its easy to miss the size when posting since modern devices often hide this).Ross

Thanks for the responses - one thing I have looked at is going through the attachments and editing them to make them smaller.
it is fairly time consuming but doable.
If you halve the x y size of the picture you can 1/4 the storage space...
If anyone is willing to volunteer to give me a hand with this I can make you an admin and tell you how to do this.
Basically it involves downloading the images from a post, resizing them, then editing the post, deleting the attachments and reuploading the smaller size ones.
Takes about 2-3 mins a post...
If we edited every attachment over 500k we would get some space back...

I noticed that a week or so ago, when I tried to post and received the message that we were over-limit. Since then I have been uploading the images elsewhere and using the linked image function instead of attachments.
I am willing to pitch in as well. Would that make the forum Ad-free as side-effect?

I too have been posting my photos on a different site and then using a link to that site.
I would be happy to contribute either money or effort to maintain this forum. It is something I look forward to viewing every day.

I don't know anything about computers or pictures, but I can throw a few dollars your way if you need to go that route.

Hey Mike yes happy to contribute to forum costs.
Perhaps we could also help by going through our own posts and checking/ resizing our attachments also? I usual resize mine to 50% but no idea how big they are...

I would have no problem with a monetary contribution.
I have finished removing 293 images that I had posted.
