I have a thing about playing a game on or close to its anniversary date. I have plans to run a 54mm Culloden game at my local club on April 17, the day after the battle's 275th anniversary. I could use Commands and Colors Jacobite Rebellion rules, but I would also like to consider non grid game rules. I only have so many figures, around 80 infantry, 15 cavalry and a few guns per side, so ideally something where I can use 8 figure infantry units.
Any recommendations?
Thanks, Nick Stern

Hi Nick,
Andy Callan wrote some Jacobite Rebellion rules for the Wofun Games Jacobite range-they are free to download I believe. If not then I can send you the pdf. I also have some very simple rules from an old Wargames Illustrated magazine that I could send you if you want. I've played and enjoyed both sets of rules.
Best wishes Anthony

Thanks, Anthony! I located the WI 134 issue containing the rules. I'll take a look at the Wofun Games site next. Do you recall how many miniatures you used? The WI rules use 8 figures per unit, which is perfect for my modest collection.
Thanks again, Nick

Hi Nick,
The great thing about Andy's rules is that units are made up of stands, and the number of figures per stand is irrelevant. If I remember correctly there are six stands to an infantry battalion. Come to think of it, it might be awkward converting an 8-figure unit into a 6-stand one...
Andy's rules have more flavour (e.g. Highland clans drift when charging) but I once played out all three battles of the 1745 rebellion at the Guildford Club in one evening using the WI rules, which was great fun. They have since been used as a basis for WSS rules and other periods.
Cheers Anthony

Hi Anthony. The WoFun rules are based on the Andy Callan rules written in the Peter Dennis books, so if you have those, you could try them.
A friend of mine has used the rules in various Peter Dennis books, and he says they work really well.

Comparing the Wofun rules with the rules by the same author in Peter Dennis' Paperboys Jacobite book, the Wofun rules are more streamlined, which also means less unique to the period. Since I am going to be hosting a 4 to 6 player game at my club, I think I will go with the Wofun rules, but I am eager to try out the more complex, and more historic, Paperboys rules in a smaller game at home.
Thanks for all the suggestions!
Nick
