Can anyone advise on what they use for buildings? I am not a modeler and I am total cheapskate. The most I have done is to print out a square ruin (from WargamesVault) and lay out some grey cloth to indicate built up areas, but I would like something more aesthetic. What do other people do, and can you recommend anything you have tried out?

briddy,
I'm not sure helpful this is but I gave up using true-scale 54mm buildings a long time ago, as their footprint distorted the playing area and in any case did not work with the ground scale of the rules being used. I now use buildings scaled for 28mm figures and they look perfectly OK next to my 40mm or 54mm armies. I buy ready-made/painted buildings from a variety of sources; my best are the timber-framed buildings I got from the Emperor Toad's Emporium for my ECW 54mm. If you check out previous Woking Games Day pics on this forum you will see what I mean.
Best wishes Anthony

If you're happy to print stuff out you could try cardstock buildings? Or printing out paper buildings and sticking them together? Not too much modelling involved. Sorry I don't have a link handy but have a google you might find something

Like Anthony I use large 28mm scale buildings (I do use 54mm buildings for Garden games...). The best one I have is the Farm that EM4 used to do which is on the large side for 28mm anyway....

Lots of great ideas out there, some of which I have seen. I like the idea of the 28mm buildings and think that might be a way to go, although mine will probably go down more of a stylistic route since that is how I roll.

Stylistic works for me too. I've always liked Mike's 'toy town' buildings he makes for 54mm PWG games.

I made these two houses out of plain wooden bird houses sold at Michael's Arts and Crafts

Now they do look good! I think a visit to my local pet shop might be in order

I make my buildings out of foam board covered with craft sticks that represent planking along with balsa wood for roof and floor framing. I downloaded some pictures of 15mm (1:100) war gaming buildings from websites and scaled them up by 3 to achieve the required size for 54mm wargaming.

My first wargame was 10 Airfix 54mm British and 10 Airfix 54mm Germans fighting over an old shoe box with a door and windows cut into the sides. Later I covered it with strips of balsa wood and added a roof.

This is my next building which is under construction. I need to design the roof framing so it is removable as well as install the doors and window frames. Attachments:
