Cross posted on PMCD Mobilisatie:
I ran a Culloden game at my club (outdoors and all wearing masks) last Saturday. It was one day off from the 275th anniversary of battle. I was in a quandary as to which rules to use as, in the real battle, the odds were strongly stacked against the Jacobites. So I decided to try Howard Whitehouse's A Gentleman's War (AGW) because the card activation mechanic makes for greater uncertainty, which can be infuriating at times if one is used to more predictable game progression. As it turned out, between the card draws and very poor dice rolling by one of the Government players, the day was won by the Jacobites.

Great stuff. I bought a copy of Howard's rules, but I just can't figure out how the cards work. It is one of those games where someone has to show me how to play. Thanks for posting.

All that tartan made my painting hand start twitching! Oh my, what an absolutely lovely game and it looks to have been a very bloody affair as well.

Excellent report but may I ask you a question regarding your bases and movement trays? Where did you get them or did you print them yourself? They are just the bases that I have been looking for!
Thanks Bradley

Hi Bradley, Thanks for your kind words. I bought the bases from Warbases in UK. warbases.co.uk/ I just ordered some more and they were delivered in under two weeks to me in California. Best, Nick

Really great game - I fear that I shall never be able to get tartan like that! I am going for a more shabby/muddy 'long in the field' look for my Scots Brigade.
I wlked the battlefield a couple of years ago and it is beautiful - and thoughtfully presented.

Nick,
A belated question (very belated considering you posted this two years ago!): What figures did you use? I think I spy some AIP Brits and some Replicant Jacobites...were the AIP Brits from their Seven Years War range?
Best wishes Anthony

Hi Anthony,
It's quite a mixed bag. The majority of the Highlanders are, indeed, Replicants Jacobites, both the Culloden Scots and the ECW Scots. There are a few Cherilea Highlanders as well. One of my favorite conversions is a Caucasian warrior from Engineer Basevich with a putty bonnet. I did have to draft some of my AWI British. The ones in the more accurate uniforms are AIP SYW. I even found some painted metal SYW British and Loyal Highlanders by Garibaldi Miniatures. Prince Charlie and Billy the Butcher are from Replicants. Replicants did some very accurate British infantry, that I still need to paint up. After painting all those tartans, I had to take a break!
Best regards, Nick

Hi Nick,
Very many thanks-that's very helpful. I was too late to be able to get hold of the Replicants Brits as they are now no longer available. According to their website they used to do mounted British Dragoons for Culloden too, but they have been long gone. Have you modelled any Jacobite Lowland units, and if so what figures did you use? I note that there is one figure in the Replicants Jacobite range wearing Trews, but he is armed with two pistols, ands a whole of unit of Jacobite cowboys wouldn't really look the part!
Cheers Anthony
