Hi Dave, I've put you down for the Royalists -now who wants to be the good guys? Alan, you can guarantee that I will be eating out after the game, even if I'm the only one! Cheers Anthony

Oops , looked back Anthony and found you had mentioned Tabletop Battles. Can you tell me a little of them as I can’t seem to find them on googling.

Great to have you in the game Alan! Table Top Battles (2nd ed) are a DBA derivative using square grids. Thanks to the grid there is no mind-bending geometry to complicate moving elements-the one thing I hated about the DBX system. Each element has a single combat factor that is also its points value. A really clever mechanic is that you can have a melee consisting of multiple elements on each side, and all participating elements on the losing side suffer the same result-push back or die! It can result in a big hole in someone's line...The rules cover Ancients to Horse and Musket with WW2/Sci-fi skirmish rules thrown in as an appendix. I have used them for Saxons vs Vikings with Alastair and ECW with Mike, and both enjoyed their games as did I. For the 16th/17th Century pike and shot are separate elements, which is ideal for Brentford as the Parliamentary regiments were dispersed when the Royalists attacked. There is an appropriate tactical factor to encourage pike and shot to operate together and also a distinction between charging cavalry and 'Reiter' type cavalry, again ideal for the ECW. When it comes to the ECW I find it very difficult to settle on one set of rules, so I'm looking forward to using these rules again for the period to see if they grow on me.
Prepare yourself to defend the seat of parliamentary democracy!
Best wishes Anthony

Anthony, Thanks for your reply . Now having googled the correct thing l realise l bought them in 2020!! They are indeed interesting and I have relocated them from the pile of papers, rules etc on the bedside table shelf. I will do my homework. Did you buy the “Portable Pike &Shot Wargame “ book by Bob ? It is well worth a look. I have tried it. Ross Mcfarlane has a one page set on his blog which could be easily adapted to gridded ecw too.

Alan, I do indeed have Bob's PW ECW rules. As you know there are two sets of rules in the book, elements of both of which I like. The thing about TTB is that there is no record-keeping as an element is either dead or alive, and that appeals to me-just as Bob's original PW rules did/do. I do intend to try out PW ECW but I would like to give TTB another go for the ECW period first. You may have noticed that TTB uses a D12, which means you don't need the complex combat results matrix used by DBX as a D12 allows for more tactical factors to represent different battlefield conditions. You will of course have the chance to form your own opinion of the rules soon Best wishes Anthony

Only kidding Anthony. Looking forward to meeting up again and playing some games. And I too look forward to a meal after the event.
Not many sleeps now til the big day!!!!!

Anthony,
I wondered if I could ask a favour please.
I seem to remember you saying you were putting your Colonial units for the Portable Wargame on bases instead of having them as individuL figures.
Have you done this yet?
If you have, I wondered if you could bring a base to show me on the 25th.
The reason I ask I that I'm about to embark on a Colonial set of figures - starting with the British and Turks at Tek-El-Kabir, and I wanted to see your ideas for basing before I start the project.
Thanks. Only 50 sleeps til the big day!!!!!!
Best Wishes Dave
