I really like the look of the Atherton trench system and it's not too expensive for completely finished pieces (and you don't have to buy the whole thing at once even).
The only "down side" is that both of the above have the "trench set in a hill" look. I'm not put off by that, just noting that for those who do.
I thought about acquiring enough cushion foam to cover my card table (38" square) and cut into pieces so i can arrange them for a longer version of the above, but also so the attacker is always above the trench. It would also give me a lot more hills for my non trench games. This isn't too expensive - less than a single Atherton end piece and is easily stored.
However, before I commit to anything (or going forward with both options above) - are there any other commercial trench options besides Atherton, suitable for 54s? (my ebay-fu was unfruitful)

Amera Mouldings do a 1/35th Scale trench section and end as well as a complete trench that you could use as a forward section. I haven't used them myself but they look quite effective and cheap. They don't do a T-junction in the 1/35th set but you could probably make one from other sections... www.amera.co.uk/product.php?range=t

Excellent find, Mike!
The price is more than reasonable and they look quite nice.

I own quite a few of the Atherton pieces. I think they are great and quite reasonable. I have some of the Atherton 1/72 trenches as well and they are fine, but they do tend to warp a bit when painted, so be prepared to attach the pieces to a base. I have played a couple of fun trench raid games with the Atherton pieces.

I remember seeing those photos before, which is how I knew I liked the look of the Atherton pieces!

I will post some photos of a semi permanent indoor 'museum standard' trench system I am creating! Alas nothing beats the real thing ...

I really like the look of your cushion foam trenches. At 38" square it's quite possible to cover the entire table and 'dig' your tranches as desired or replace sections. I think it looks much better than the 'standing on top of the ground' style trenches. Which brings back memories of the Bellona trench system I had in my youth! The white sheet makes for an effective snow covering as well.

Thank you, Brian. I've found temporarily that I can supplement my foam hills with some books, DVD cases, and small boxes to make the trench (https://54mmorfight.blogspot.com/2021/12/the-southern-front-1917ish.html) - funds for foam seem to have been spent acquiring figures for other projects!
