Hi,
While I dabbled in 54mm for Little Wars (matchstick cannons et all) some years back I was very taken with the 42mm figures shown in Howard Whitehouse's A Gentleman's War. A look at Aly Morrison's website had me putting an order into SPencer-Smith Miniatures. Having played a few more games recently I thought I'd put up a few photos of the armies. I'm nto much of a photographer so I've had to pose the units so get some decent shots. Photographing glossy soldiers isn't the easiest thing to do either! As you'll see I've very mjuch been inspired by the units paint by Aly Morrison to form mhy armies. Arcadia's uniforms have clearly been inspired by Great Britain and Franconia by France. I've taken advantage of the range offering the possibility of units in the various poposed but not adopted French uniforms which adds some variety but, sadly, French cavalry had at this time lost most of the glamorous range of Napoleonic unforms.
Action develops around the hill which was a focus of the battle until its end
Up close and skirmishing
The view from the other side of the hill (confirming that the grass isn't greener)
The other end of the hill
And a look towards the centre
That's the photo limit for this post so part 2 follows

And a few more photos:
An almost massed battery supports the Guards and Fusiliers
Looking from the Franconian position
The afore-mentioned Franconian position
More Franconians and the general himself
Finally, a view of the opposing general
I hope that's been of interest, I'd love to see more photos of 42mm forces and games on here.

Brilliant Brian. I love these figures as well. Have done the 1st Schleswig-holstein war in the Shiny Toy Soldiers range. Have a couple of Little Britain's units and have to say your photos are an inspiration to get some more!!!!!!

Great pictures Brian , looks a great fun game ! Figures look terrific on a wonderfully minimalistic table. Be interesting to see your figures too Dave. That is a fascinating period and I would love to see some Danish troops in action!

Thanks gents, glad you liked them. I love the LB range, particularly the modular aspect of it. I could keep on happily painting new units and there's a couple more on the painting bench at present before moving to the Fenians in Canada project. I don't care for the 4.7 gun though, traditional as it may be and with one exception the guns shown are from Irregular (oh, for more photos on their website). The exception is a Crescent 18pdr. I'd bought several for the Little Wars matchstick cannon games and could spare one. It always looked a bit small for 54mm but looks good in 42mm.
I'm really trying for a HGW Little Wars style of table with the regular shapes for hills. The trees and hedges are those I've mentioned elsewhere on the forum, laser cut by Warbases. I have some simple fences, not shown here, made from Styrene strips. Stone walls will be good old Brtiain's. I've been designing some houses to have laser cut but have discovered that Warbases do some very basic (and cheap) house shells so I've ordered a couple to experiment with. I've also ordered some of their windows and doors which I'll just stick to the outside though there's also a thought of just drawing some doors and windows on before assembly. Some of my 28mm houses (from Hovels) look ok size-wise but don't fit the style, so anything I make will, like the trees, be undersize as to my mind they look right.
Dave: are some of the STS Schleswig-Holstein shown on the Spencer-Smith website yours? Lots of nice work there and I'm really tempted. However I've 15mm forces for SH wars (there's some photos in Lone Warrior and the Continental Wars magazine) so I'm more thinking (yes, Alan, another project!) of post-Napoleonic with very fancy uniforms. An Imagi-nations project with the two armies formed from the most attractive uniformed units of the period! One for the long dull days of winter.
I've also done a number of figures for the 'cameo characters' as used in A Gentlemen's War and I'll post some photos shortly, forgot to do so yesterday.

Hi Brian Yes the photos on the Spencer Smith site are mine. I haven't done anything with them for ages - I still need to finish the Danes off and I need to get some cavalry figures. But, having a butterfly mind, other projects cone along!!!!!

A Gentleman's War adds a bit of fun / disruption to carefully laid plans with 'cameo characters'. These have been fun to do (and there're more to come). Those so far:
L to R: Bruiser (Irregular Miniatures) Old Duffer (Irreg) Inconvenient Civilian (Irreg conversion) and Regimental Mascot (Irreg)
L to R: Spy Hunter - Arcadia (Little Briton) Spy (Irreg Conversion) and Spy Hunter - Franconia (LB)
L to R: Rash officer (Irreg) Foreign Observer (LB) Snipers (LB)
L to R: Messengers (Irreg)
L to R: Staff officer - Arcadia (LB) Staff officer - Francona (Irreg)
One more photo to come as I've reached the limit on this post

And the finale photo of my Cameo Characters fro GW:
L to R: Sergeant Major and Boy Scout - Franconia (LB), Sergeant Major and Boy Scout - Arcadia (LB)
More to come when (a) I've got the figures and (b) the time to do them.

I’ve now completed several more cameo characters for A Gentleman’s War.
L to R The General’s Mistress – Phoenix Cantiniere (a really bad conversion of a Spencer-Smith figure) Oscar Wilde (Andrew Stadden)
L to R Spy - Phoenix Mad Scientist (a conversion of an Andrew Stadden figure to add his white coat) Another dashing officer (because I couldn’t resist the figure) – Irregular
Surgeon – Phoenix Medic – Irregular for the first aid post
It may look like there are splashes of white paint on some figures but it’s just that glossy figures are a bugger to photograph. In future I’ll try and remember to take some before I varnish.
