Hi Has anyone adapted Battle! to 54mm? I'm undecided whether to use Bolt-action or Battle! for a Borduria v Slydavia border clash. Charles G added to the original book via the Meccano magazine and in the December 1970 issue wrote a brief tantalising article on fighting a 54mm WW2 garden clash. The Meccano magazine has free access PDF so hopefully as I'm promoting said publication is okay -this archive of the Meccano Magazine has been produced and made freely available by the Internet Meccano Magazine Scanning Group meccano.magazines.free.fr/The pages in question: meccano.docx (716.76 KB)

Borduria v Slydavia, brilliant! Will the Boy Reporter be present?

We tried it once but it didn't work very well for us. As I recall, amongst other things, the original were aimed at 1/72nd figures on a fairly large table and more vehicles and men then we could fit on my friend's table and once the shooting started it was over in no time. It was also more fiddly in many ways that what we were used to, it was like the 70's when we started gaming.

I played these rules a lot in 1/72 but never tried the alfresco 54mm way. The need of templates for arcs of fire and hit circles would involve making these . I am sure there are more accessible rules that you could choose.

I looked at the rules for 54mm but they did not cover the early or middle part of WW2 therefore I opted out as there were other rules about.

Thanks for the feedback - i did play Battle back in the 70s but was a very junior partner to big brother and his friends! My limited command never did last long, which matches RossMac's conclusions. Will probably go for Boltaction, maybe with some matchstick guns. Using Herald early modern - and my conversion skills don't run to a making a TinTin figure. Will post some pictures shortly.

The Herald early modern - 1960s I guess - are reaally nice figures, not as good as their ACW but still well sculpted. With fond memories of the few I had I've considered pitting them aganst my 1/35 Daleks. I always thought the Airfix infantry combat group were inspired by them.
Do let us know how you get on with this. I'm about to start something along those lines inspired by Mark Copplestone's new 'neo-retro' interwar range. 30mm but very toy soldier style.

I don't have 'Office' so could not read the document. I played some Syldavia versus Borduria games. I used WW1 and WW2 Germans, some painted in black uniforms with red armbands with moustaches on the bands. I used Airfix, Britains Detail and Lone Star. I also had a Black Shorts unit of British (Redian) fascist volunteers. For Syldavians I used WW2 and WW1 French and Russians - AIP and Marx. The tanks were a mix of WW1 and mid war tankettes, some converted from Lone Star brengun carriers. I used my own adaptation of Funny Little Wars.

I'm using Herald early moderns because they are 45mm base to eye level and don't look too big for the dinky and britains vehicles I've purchased for the TinTin armies. Toys I never had but always admired - surprisingly cheap. Used the comics for the uniforms so green versus tan- with Bordurias motorised troops wearing brown and blue (according to the Calculus affair). Looking to use bolt-action rules with FLW for the tanks, artillery and mortars. Will post soon. Saw Mark Copplestones gorgeous figures on Tradgardmastre's blog and now I'm desperately trying to avoid buying the lot -
