Got my copy today.
A very small number of rules changes, all of which seem improvements.
If an activation fails, but your leader is near, you can reroll, but only for the first activation fail per turn. An alternative to the little wars house rule of a failed move (not shoot or attck) activation ending your go.
You can purchase leader skills with some of your warband points. Will allow me to widen the difference between sides in my anglo-norman vs anglo-norman battles.
Some new unit upgrades.
For Dark Ages there are shield wall rules (different from shiltron)
For larger number of units games there are group moves (but not group shoots or attacks)
Optional unit flank rules I was already playing and like.
Hardback book. Layout much better than original. Will be quicker to look up forgotten rules mid game. All new rules are repeated together in an appendix to make it easy for players who know the old rules.
All the photographs/osprey drawings of the old book, plus about the same number of new ones (some from Crusader States, and I expect others from A Viking in the Sun)
A couple more scenarios, including an interesting one where the battle starts with a duel between champions.
As somebody who likes these rules I am happy I brought the second edition, even though the rules are virtually unchanged, the few extra features should enrich games.

Patrick,
Thanks for review. It's very helpful and has pushed me over the edge toward buying the new version. Do you play the game with 54mm figures? If so, do you double move distances and ranges?
Cheers, Nick Stern

I got mine yesterday too. I completely agree with Patrick's comments-the 2nd edition is well worth having, and I especially like the once per turn leader re-roll activation rule as it still makes command a little more difficult than later periods but mitigates the danger of one failed roll leading to a missed turn. The production values are indeed very high and the book is lovely to read.

I wholeheartedly agree with everyones positive comments. I am just about to have a run through solo game in 54mm just to 'get my eye in' and try out the new rule changes. I particularly like the new rule which allows failed 'wild charge' activated units to then roll for a normal move activation (movement only). I often found that a failed wild charge, which meant a static turn frustrating and left key units behind. The ability to repostion them with an ordinary move if they fail the wild charge, is a great idea. I also like the look of the new buffs that you can give to other command figures in other units appealing,

I play with 54mm. Double distances on a table, trebled on the garden lawn.

Hi Alan,
Northern gaming day unlikely. My mum suddenly got nasty dementia and has been sectioned. Spending most of my spare time driving to and from the mental hospital. Motte and bailey castle progressing slowly.
regards Pat
