After reading through Contemptible Little Armies, I could not resist adding on-table air support to my WWI Italians and Austro-Hungarians.
I have acquired a 1/48 Nieuport 17 kit which looks like it will do - but I see a 1/32 model of the same plane costs about the same and is a few inches bigger. I'm a bit of a klutz, so navigating my troops around a larger model might prove damaging to one or the other, but, on the other hand, the visual impact certainly sounds like it would be greater, and it would be exactly in scale with the figures (I use 1/48-1/50 armor with my 54mm WWII forces so I'm not against underscale vehicles by any means).
I am pretty sure that Tim G. at Megablitz and More uses 1/72 (feel free to correct me!). My poor eyesight and excessive distribution of thumbs makes 1/72 seem a bit risky, but there is so much variety of kit there.
Any smaller than that I think will look like my figures are flying kites (I have several Wings of Glory planes and confirmed this) - but, I readily admit that has a certain charm, too.
For those of you who field planes in your 54mm games, what scale plane do you use?
If it matters I'm looking at both grid and gridless rules.

I think the smaller scale helps with some forced perspective. I would go with the 1/48.

I agree with 79thpa. I would always use smaller scale vehicles and aircraft (and buildings) with 1/32 figures. 1/48 tanks and planes work well and don't dominate the tabletop.

Thank you both! Always good to have confirmation that I'm on the right track - especially before I actually start building this model. Of course, if anyone else wants to chime in, I'm still interested in hearing your response!

I'm using 1/48 ME109s for my Borduria v Slydavia wargame - herald infantry with dinky vehicles. ebay chinese clip together bought 2 ready painted £4 for 2 + postage. They aren't going to win any prizes for their finish but for bolt action air support perfect!

Bernard, I would love to see pics of your games. Do you have them shared anywhere?

I do indeed use 1/72 aircraft and 1/48 vehicles with my 1/32 toy soldiers. It sounds all wrong but to somehow works! I find aircraft (and vehicles) in larger scales take up far too much space in the game, to nothing of storage, cost etc. speaking of which, 1/72 aircraft models can be dirt cheap and there are also in the same scale various pre-built plastic & diecast ranges.

JohnY I'm considering doing a blog but seems like a lot of work! so impressed with those that do. I've employed my 14 yr old son to paint the Herald infantry (uniforms based on the Calculus affair) very simple toy soldier style - he's nearly finished! He's into Star Wars legion so needs the work lol. I'll need to improve my photography - here's the Slydavian ME109 to counter the Bordurien one!

I use 1/32 sized planes.

Also love the idea of having your son paint the troops for hire. I wonder if I can incentivize mine to learn to paint? If writing a blog post isn't your thing, there's always Instagram for just sharing photos of your toys!

If I am honest with myself, my small apartment does not have the room to store 1/32 planes without risking damage to them. They are so visually striking though - so I refuse to say "never".
