As a result of currently rereading ( for the nth time) Day of the Minotaur and looking forward to the Ray Harryhausen exhibition in Edinburgh (fingers crossed) I am looking for figure suggestions for such as centaurs, dryads and the rest of the gang... Thanks in anticipation.

We have played games on this theme - all the figures were produced by one member, Chris Swan. I will ask him for details - I think they appeared in a wargames magazine too. Splendid fun I have to say.

Thanks Mike, I look forward to hearing what you find out. Anthony, thanks for the heads up with the rules. I bought the Mortal Gods boxed set, cannot face putting the figures together and have left it in the shed. I quite liked the cards etc but wondered if I might prefer simple toy soldierly rules rather. Have you used them Anthony?

Hi Alan,
I'm with you re assembling the figures! I sold my sprues and bought second-hand painted 28mm Hoplites etc from Hinds Figures. I do like the game's basing system and am thinking of using it for the Rampant family of games when using 28mm (or 1/72). I have read the rules in detail but haven't played them yet although I am very impressed with them-they're a lot simpler than they look at first glance. I also have Men of Bronze from Osprey which is for larger Hoplite games which I also like the look of but haven't had the chance to play them yet. I will endeavour to inflict both games on my long-suffering opponents Mike and Alastair soon and report back!
Best wishes, Anthony

You will find most of what is available falls into the 57mm (2.25") to 60mm (2.375") size range. LOD produces Greeks and Amazons. They also have a ship and walls. lodtoysoldiers.comExpeditionary Force has a range of Classical Greeks. www.expeditionaryforce.com.sg/60mmclassicalgreece-c-9_34.htmlThey also have Persians. Some of the sets in their German and Celtic barbarian ranges might be of use. Engineer Basevich is more focused on the Biblical era but some of the figure might be useful. Look at sets 11, 15, 23 and 24 Supreme has several inexpensive bagged sets of Greeks.

Back in the late 1980's a chap called Robin Hunt from the Rayners Lane wargames club developed a demonstration game called Greek Gods and Heroes which used Atlantic Ancient Greeks. I seem to recall there was a write up about the game in Battle magazine. The Atlantic figures are about 60mm and turn up regularly on ebay, especially if you extend the search area to include EU.

Here's the responses from Chris Swann:
The figures used for the Myology game came from a company called Plastoy Tubo Plastic figures. They come in a pack of 10 figures which are roughly 45 – 50 mm tall. The pack includes 3 Greek heroes in suitable poses and a mixture of Mythological beast including a Faun/satyr, a Minotaur, a lesser Cyclopes/titan, a centaur and a Pegasus figure. They are pre painted but can be enhanced by using washes. we used 2 packs to make up enough heroes plus a couple of spare figures from my bits box suitably adapted.
Some of my monsters came from a local charity shop which had in stock some Resin Figures from what must have been a discontinued magazine range. From these I found a Cyclopes, Cerberus and a giant figure suitable for a titan. They were already painted and needed no other work. They stand about 24 cm tall
However, needed such creatures as The Hydra, The Sphinx, The Chimera not to mention Fire Breathing Bulls, Lions and wild Boars.
A trip to the Works, which sell discount Books, art materials and children’s toys (it begins with W) gave me access to packs of cheap plastic farm animals, African wild life, sea life and Dinosaurs. From these I converted my other monsters; The Chimera was literally constructed from the front half of a lion, the rear end of a goat and the heads from a goat, lion and small dinosaur figure.
The Sphinx was made from a lion with the face of a larger human model grafted on and the wings from the spare Pegasus model added (you a only need 1 Pegasus)
The Hydra used the body from a large marine dinosaur with the fins cut off and the heads from four long necked dinosaurs models (I used Plesiosaurs models)
I wanted my Medusa figure to be based on the Ray Harryhausen version. One does come with the Plastoy Tubo pack but this is a human female with snakes added to her hair. So I took the upper part of the body and grafted it onto the end of a toy dinosaur tail to give her the half human /half snake look I wanted. Items from my bits box meant a bow and a quiver were also added and with a fresh paint job I achieved the look I needed.
Hope this helps.
If your friend wants anything else I have the full article plus the rules and cards which I can to you or him via WETRANSFER.
Cheers , Chris.
