This is my 60mm fantasy campaign patterned after Tony Bath's Hyboria game. It started with me wanting to see just how much I could get out of PowerPoint as a map-making tool. A friend of mine used call PowerPoint the "poor man's graphic layout program" or something like that. He used buy new boardgames and then make FAQs and Cheat Sheets and other supporting material in Powerpoint; and then we'd buy the games ourselves and be wondering why all the useful stuff was missing! Anyhow, I set out to make maps using PowerPoint and that very soon developed into a thing to use the maps for: the Lohwand Campaign. I was originally planning to use 54mm figures but then I discovered that there was so much out there in 60mm that I've switched. I especially like the look of the Expeditionary Force stuff and hope to make my first order today. Here is the ongoing thread for the Lohwand Campaign, in its current, large-scale guise: LINKAnd here is the map of the Northlands, more or less complete. As you can see I have committed many crimes against literature, stealing names left, right and center! I've since expanded southwards and there is a WIP map of the Southlands.

I placed my first order with XForce yesterday, the start of my legions for the Tharkallan Empire (my proxy Rome). I really like the way XForce has created six different looks for the Romans, including Praetorians and Auxilliary. I've been reading WRG's "Armies and Enemies of Imperial Rome" - I think that is the correct title - by Phil Barker and I suspect that if I look closely enough I will find each of the uniform variants somewhere. Read about my plans here LINK though, as everybody knows, "no plan ever survives contact with the enemy"!

The latest blog post in which I begin to detail Umbar, my proxy Carthage: Lohwand: Umbar in Detail, Part 1The map of Umbar: The Tharkallan Empire is my proxy Roman Empire. As I am using XForce 60mm figures, it is EIR as opposed to Republican, but that doesn't matter as my Umbar isn't straight up Carthage either. In fact, though I am purposely setting them up for a rumble, it need not end like the Punic Wars!

Posted the latest update to my Lohwand Campaign today. I've been trying to flesh out the Tharkallan Empire. I've borrowed from Greg Stafford's Glorantha setting, co-opting the names of his Lunar Emperors for Tharkalla. link

Just caught up with all your posts, and I'm loving it so far! I went into *some* detail with my imagi-nation world and each of the countries in it, but not quite to this extent (I've got the current rulers of each, and some other important personalities like seneschals and heirs, but not the entire royal line).
Excited to see the battles and campaigns this leads to!

Thanks Joe! You forget that I am re-purposing parts of the extensive background from an RPG. That background was developed to aid referees in the design of Hero Quests - Glorantha/RuneQuest/HeroQuest is all about mythology and the interaction between Heroes, the Spirit World, and the Gods. So Greg Stafford, creator of Glorantha, wrote a lot of stuff I am using to provide my lineages. It's like having a ready made source of names - and not just names, but also relationships and a timeline I have made to fit my campaign. The Dara Happan lineages are also helping with Carmania, Turan and Saird. I am hoping it will help with naming regiments and noble houses, etc. Things I know now that I didn't a week ago: Carmania is ruled by a Padishah. It was once part of Dara Happa, but also turned the tables and ruled Dara Happa for a time. Turan and Saird were also part of Dara Happa - but I may have more-or-less decided that before. Also, Dara Happa at its peak might have been the greatest Empire on Lohwand. I also know that the Mournsea used to be land; which perhaps might be why it's called the Mournsea, but which I definitely did not know when I assigned that name to it! One thing I gained from reading Tony Bath's book was that he stressed having things worked out first rather than having to go back and try and add family names, etc. And I'm finding it as much fun bringing the background info together as fighting battles. It's also generating scenarios. I wrote that the Empress Celestius was slain storming a pirate citadel on Cirith Ungol. I'm now thinking I could probably fight a preliminary battle leading to that, perhaps using Saga: Age of Magic rules. I've been trying to make an integrated timeline, incorporating all the major nations. That's a bit of work! Howard

Are you familiar with the Pendragon RPG? (King Arthur, etc) It has a system for generating fiefs that I am wondering if I can modify. In its raw form it is too low level. I would need to raise it so that it covered Duchies or Provinces rather than knightly manors. I'm hoping to borrow ideas though... like "Glory" which is something Knights aspire to gain. Also, each character has a series of personality traits that some what like the system Tony devised only more comprehesive and less "clunky" in the way it works.

I've heard of Pendragon but never used it (I'm more a wargaming guy with an interest in RPGs than the other way around).
Have you heard of the book "Fantasy Wargaming" by Martin Hackett? (https://www.amazon.com/Fantasy-Wargaming-Martin-Hackett/dp/1852602139) It was recommended on a podcast I listened to as similar in execution to Tony Bath's book, but with more fantasy elements in the worldbuilding.
