.. is a total of 1 figure so far I've been resisting this scale but thought I would make a few conversions and buy a couple of figures to see how they work for my dungeon crawl game. I have a few truly awful 40mm army men that are horribly detailed but make great armatures for conversions. So this guy has a star wars head, slightly oversized but it works ok and tooth pick staff and a bit of sculpting putty. A bit more tidy up and then I'll paint him up looking at this picture now I think I forgot to do something about the grenade on his belt!

Forty mil is a great size best of 54mm combined with the handy space saving nature of 28s. You have done a great job with the conversion, l really look forward to seeing more…

I heartily concur with Alan! I nearly went all in with 40mm before I became involved with 54mm gamers. I currently have a 40mm Dark Ages collection, and may well start other 40mm collections in periods not well served by 54mm, such as 13th century Barons Wars (Irregular Miniatures do an excellent 13th century range in 42mm).

Agree that 40mm figures are a great size to collect. Built up 2 Sash and Sabre AWI armies a few years back when those figures first came out - wanted armies with a minimal number of cavalry as these are quite expensive in this scale. Another good thing is, at a pinch, you can use the same scenery etc. as you would for 25/28 mm figures without it looking too much out of scale! 👍

It's a strangely appealing scale! I can see why 40mm collectors collect 40mm Large enough to not get lost but small enough to scale up the terrain abit. Do you have any recommendations for figures or websites? I've got my eye on a few different brands. Love the look of the elastolin range wow they have stood the test of time I reckon

I'm fairly invested in 54mm but I'm keen to put something small together and see how it goes

Hi Jhonpog
One interesting website that includes 40mm figures is gloriouslittlesoldiers.blogspot.com It’s hosted by Andy who is the UK distributor for Old Glory and Sash & Sabre figures. He can sometimes be a bit, shall we say, “forthright” in some of his views e.g. he loathes Lion Rampant type rules and detests plastic figures (his blog, his choice!) but there is a 40mm section on the menu that links to his collection of medieval, 30 years war and ACW figures and some interesting battle reports that you might find useful.

Bill I enjoy Andy's blog - partly because he wears his heart on his sleeve and says what he thinks! I am building a collection of 40mm Front Rank AWI which I picked up quite cheaply with the view to starting with 12 man units for Rebels and Patriots, expanding to 24 man units for Black Powder and then on to 48 man units for The Wargame... I estimate that I'll be playing Black Powder in a couple of years and The Wargame in about 7 years time at the current rate of painting... (and all the other projects crowding in) Mike

I have dark age figures in 40mm , mainly Expeditionary Force supplemented by metal ones from Old Glory. Talking of which I use some OG figures for my work in progress- Western Rising of 1549 as well as Doug Miller figures. I have some Elastolin from childhood that have been roped in too. A few figures are Irregular Miniatures. I have syw armies too which are Prince August homecasts , not cast by me.

Alan, I have just ordered a load of 40mm OG Dark Ages figures with a view to replacing my own X-Force plastics, as there are a greater variety of figures available and OG will probably expand their range further in the future. I hadn't thought of using both makes in the same collection; have you re-painted your plastics to blend in with your OG figures or do they look OK alongside OG as they are? Also, I've long wanted to collect Tudor wars and rebellions in either 40mm or 54mm. What OG figures do you use for the Western Rising? (Glad you didn't call it the Prayer Book Rebellion .)

I like converting cheapo figures into something else. I generally stick to 54mm but I use figures this size as Munchkins, Gillikins etc.
