Had a very productive 10 minutes in the high street today and picked up some amazing stuff from the charity shops. First up, some Marvel characters I can repaint after some conversion. I’m thinking I will trim off the silver discs of Thor, and headswap Hulk, but repainting Loki and whatever the blue thing is will suffice. Hidden away inside my next find was Tintin and Captain Haddock. They are around 40mm high, so I may convert them into fishing gnomes or something.

Next shop down I discovered this bargain! £6 for a basically complete pirate ship. Researching it online once I got it home it turns out to be by Playmobil, so a pretty good scale match. There is really nothing that is a tell that it is a larger scale than 1/32. The masts can be taken down for storage, and there is a cabin area under the wheel. Unfortunately the rigging was a total rat’s nest and I had to cut it away to repair the sails and mast sections. But I prefer the ease of use in play now as there is no thread to get caught up in. It all needs a good clean, but I’m not sure if I should repaint or leave as it is. Below you can see the loose bits it came with. I’ll glue the cannon heads back in to the hull. I might fix up the cannons too, although it is unfortunate there is no carriage for one of the guns.

My last find was this delightful flat pack castle from Usborne for £9. It is a great scale for 1/32, is reasonably modular and also includes some standee armies and siege equipment. The included book is a great primer for introducing youngsters to wargaming and role playing. The troop types are described with strengths and weaknesses in play suggested, along with some scenarios. Perfect to Free Kriegsspiel!

wow that's an impressive haul! Great deal on that playmobil ship I agree they seem very in-scale. That cardstock castle looks ready to roll. Can you post some pics with figures? There are a few pics online of converted ships might be worth a google
Looking forward to seeing what you do with these pieces.

Love those playmobile ships! I have two of them from when I was younger and the amount of Captain Blood-style pirate battles I've had on their decks is uncountable.

Thanks Mike! By the way, I’m not subscribed to Plastic Warrior, so please feel free to send in my photos of the possible Boxer Rebellion miniatures.

Cleaned up the haul this evening. Then I started some conversions. Thor got an axe and the discs removed, while Loki was trimmed off his sci fi armour. Hulk got a mace made out of the telescope from one of the 90mm pirates. The blue creature’s hand was cut off and glued back at a new angle, and gained a large sword from the 90mm pirates. Finally I cut the hat off the head of another pirate, and shaved down the blue creature’s head to glue the hat on.

The castle has been put away but next time it is up I will take some pictures. I’ve watched some conversions of ships on YouTube. Will dig out some links.

The plot thickens Mike! I swung by the Toy Project the other day and on the same shelf that I got the possible BR figures were the two figures in the attached photo. They were the same scale and plastic and paint job style, so I think they must be from the same set. The one wearing shorts, a suit jacket and holding a bullhorn is particularly mystifying! I did a solo playtest today of Swords, Sorcery & Squares by MaudlinJackTar, the upcoming fantasy variant from the Portable Wargame Compendium. I had a blast! The king sent his trusted advisor south to the sweltering jungle lands in the border region to secure an old temple after reports of a necromancer working his evil in the area. Upon reaching the temple he discovered that the necromancer had already raised an undead host, so forces were quickly dispatched to put them down. The battle was close fought, but the forces of good reached their exhaustion point sooner and the advisor was surrounded by cackling skeletons. The photos show my new terrain tiles that just arrived (which obviously need painting!), and sn aquarium ornament and some plants. I also have a lot of painting to do of my armies!

I’ve had great fun with these rules too. I used my 25mm Mythical Earth figures. Your great set up encourages me to try it 54mm…
