Hi, to be decided. At the moment I think there are two options:
1. The same as Woking with people hosting games that others can partake in.
2. Games based around a theme. Currently I am batting around ideas for a alternative late 19th century war with the British Empire coming under attack from the nations of the 'Poznan Pact' an alliance between France, Prussia and Russia to curtail British expansionism and to 'liberate' British overseas holdings. The Prussians supported by French forces have launched an invasion of Great Britain, French forces are moving to 'liberate' British holdings in Africa, Eqypt and Sudan. The Russians are advancing against the Northwest Territories with the intention of striking in to India. Using this as a background we could come up with a number of campaign battles that link in to this.
In the time we have available it may be too much to base a weekend solely around Option 2 but we could possibly do a mix of the two.

Anthony, It is most interesting to hear your thoughts about the forth coming games days. Were you thinking we would bring our own armies to use with option two? What rules were you thinking of using? I don’t feel it is too late for us to get organised for option two, l am sure people could bring extra figures for other to use. Probably a mix of option 1 and 2 would work well. Perhaps a theme/campaign day and a host your own game day . If we ran the theme day on Saturday games could spill into Sunday making it a naturally mixed day of gaming…

Hi all,
So, my thoughts in response to tradgrdmastre's post.
If we are able to support a 'themed' day I was thinking that players would bring their own armies that fit in with the theme. The rule set I was considering was A Gentleman's War but if we are looking to have a number of battles being fought then we could support different rule sets to fit with people's collections. A lot will depend on how many player's would like to participate in the 'themed' day as the other alternative is to have big battle that spans a number of tables.
As for the host your own then I though that would follow the tradition/format that has been established at Woking.
I also met a a gentleman at the Phalanx wargames show who was demoing a 54mm ECW game with lots of figures and I am hoping that they will be able to join us and bring along one of their 54mm collections and run a game on the Saturday. Apparently they have a very large Napoleonic collection.
As it is now the end of July I would really like to getting in laying out how the weekend will work in detail.
To do this I think we need to know the following:
1. Who is looking to attend for the full weekend? 2. If not able to do 1 which day are you looking to attend? 3. Would you like to be involved in the themed day or the host your own day if you can only do 2? 4. If you are looking to attend the full weekend would you want to play in the themed game/games?
If there is anything anyone else thinks we need to ask then please let me know.
All the best,
Antony

Anthony,
I'll be there for the weekend too, although I have no armies for the themed day 1, so I will need to insert myself into someone else's game:) I can bring my own game for day 2.
Cheers Anthony

I'll be coming up with Anthony and will be there for the weekend. I am happy to play in a themed day - I am assuming 19th Century armies? I can bring 3 suitable armies (British, Prussian and British Khaki) if we need extras...

Hi,
I'm intending to come for both days (I'm assuming that it is definitely 1st/2nd October. Most of my troops are 40mm so I can't contribute anything to the theme though I'm happy to play.
I'm hoping to be able to bring a game to run and thus contribute but please don't ask me what it is going to be. It's likely to a Fenian raid on Canada in 1860something using 40mm but it might be something else.

Would it be helpful at this stage to tell us Anthony how many figures / units we need to have /borrow to take part in the themed day? Perhaps that might help people to prepare figures and think if they want to take part.

Actually, I may still have some of the figures and cannon we used some years back to play Little Wars out in the garden. I shall delve into the more remote, little visited, regions of the toy cupboard and report.

I can report some success. I've found 2 units of infantry and 1 of cavalry (based on AGW standard unit sizes) plus gunners and lots of guns, mainly 4.7 naval guns but also an 8" howitzer! Sadly that means that 3 units of infantry and 1 of cavalry are missing along with a traction engine as a gun mover and an observation balloon. Presumed missing in action but I'll ask around those who were involved. Depending on the forces required I may be able to paint up a couple of units if I can get hold of some suitable figures.
Anthony - any further thoughts on units sizes / force size?

I will be there for the weekend- 2 days. Unfortunately I don't have any 54mm 19th century figures so would have to rely on others for me to play with their figures. Looking forward to the event. I'm presuming 1st/2nd October is still the dates for the weekend?

There have been a couple of posts asking about the size of the forces that can be used for the 'themed' battles.
I have suggested that the 'A Gentleman's War' rules (AGW) could be used for the themed battles but we can obviously use others. So, the guide I am going to give is based on the Small Army rules in AGW. If we go on to to play a bigger battle then we can use the small armies as divisions of a bigger army.
In AGW a Small Army, 50 points allowed, will have as mandatory units:
1 Commander 1 Subordinate 2 Line Infantry units (12 figures in unit/6 points per unit) 1 Light Cavalry unit (6 figures in unit/4 points per unit)
To this can be added: Up to 2 more Line Infantry units 1 Light Infantry unit (12 figures in unit/6 points per unit) 1 Heavy Cavalry unit (6 figures in unit/5 points per unit) 1 Light Cavalry unit (6 figures in unit/4 points per unit) Up to 2 Field Artillery units (3-4 figures in unit/4 points per unit) Up to 2 Horse Artillery units (3-4 figures in unit/5 points per unit) Up to 2 Machine Gun units (3-4 figures in unit/3 points per unit)
As part of the 50 points you can allocate distinctions/deficiencies to a unit such as Crack Gunners or Bad Shots. These will increase or reduce the points cost of the unit.
So, a Small Army can contain from 6 - 9 units not including the Commander and Subordinate.
I would think that less actual figures could be used in a unit but we would need to ensure they occupied the same area and would have to use casualty markers as we would still count the unit as having the AGW defined number of figures in it e.g. A line infantry unit has 8 figures but has a 'strength' of 12, we would use casualty markers to record the first 4 casualties received.
Happy to help with costing/designing a themed force.
