I'm still pondering what game to run; at the moment I'm leaning towards 40mm Saxons vs Vikings using Dan Mersey's Age of Penda rules.

Having got some of the 18mm Wiglaf Vendel figures l have come across the Penda rules mentioned. I would be interested to see how they played Anthony. Alan

Apologies Antony but I've decided to bring the Smugglers game rather than the Fenian one.

Hi Anthony I have a wargames friend (not on this forum) who would love to join us for the 2 days gaming. Will it be OK for him to come along and join us for the games and the Saturday night meal. Thanks DaveL

Alan,
Age of Penda are a great set of rules-Mike and I have played too games so far and really like them. I have 140 Wiglaf Anglo-Saxons being painted up for me as I type! I don't normally collect the same period in two scales, but Wiglaf are specifically for the 7th C AD whereas my 40mm Saxons and Vikings are 9th-10th C AD. Yes, there was a difference!
Best wishes Anthony

Hi Davel,
Completely ok with me.
Hi Mr Lewis,
If you are happy to run a game that would be great.

Anthony, Would Chinese troops be irregular or tribal under the Wiley rules? Thanks Alan

Dear Alan; I hope that some of those Chineses would be ones that made a very long trek to cross the Firth of Forth.
A small matter, but I would have thought to have seen picture of them. Not that I've made any progress at all on the Warrior Miniatures or lovely Antedeluvians you've given me in return.
I'll be in a 54mm refight of Antietam in two weeks. I'll make sure I send you pictures.
All the best; Eric

Anthony, Would Chinese troops be irregular or tribal under the Wiley rules? Thanks Alan Hi Alan, Possibly Irregular for Imperial troops and tribal for Boxers, Mongol cavalry. The Imperial troops could also have a negative trait(s) such as poor shots and/or possibly green troops. Khansu Braves could be given poorly armed instead of one of the others. They would not be given any positive traits. Boxers could given the trait bloodthirsty Regards, Antony

Anthony, Most helpful, thank you. Having had cancelled trains from Transpennine trains last Monday whilst returning from Leeds I have been rather wary of booking another journey.I am currently unable to find a reliable ( within the acceptable limits of possible disruption to travel and price) ) train to get me to the games day . I am still looking…

I regret to say that I'm having the same difficulty. Avanti have reduced the service to Stockport (Manchester) to one an hour and only seem to allow you to book a few days ahead. And at a price of £349 return... Cynical as I am about business practices these days I'm still struggling to understand how they are able to get away with this rip off. But then down here the reduced covid timetable on Southern (approx half the services we used to have) now seems to be the regular service. And as Alan has pointed out, the option of going up the East coast and then across on Transpennnine is unreliable. And takes 50% longer and cost 50% more than what would be the normal fare to Stockport.
I've even looked at flights but aren't really cheaper unless I want to go from Gatwick to Manchester via Dublin or Belfast.

Alan, Brian
I do not know if this helps at all but of you can get to Crewe I could come and pick you up if that is an option.

Anthony, A very kind offer indeed, thank you. The reality is that wherever l travel to in the area relies upon Transpenine and/or Avanti which are unreliable and overpriced. I write as one who uses and supports public transport a great deal.

Thanks for the kind offer Antony but even getting to Crewe is difficult.
As with anything on the west coast line, rail enquiries says that new timetables and fare availability have not yet been finalised. Avanti say they are developing a new timetable which won't depend on drivers working over-time - all part of the dispute with the unions If I were travelling over the next couple of days I could get a more reasonable fare of £93 as long as I don't want to travel at a 'peak time' when the cost rises to £369 ! However, it's still a reduced service and subject to cancellations. Hopefully it will improve over the next week or so.
