I wonder if you all might indulge me and allow me to field an Imperial Chinese Army of the period in the themed day? Perfectly understand if that is a bridge too far for folkā¦

Hi all, Thought I would summarise where we are with the Northern Games Day which will take take place over the weekend of 1/2 October 2022 at Element Games in Stockport. I have booked 10 tables for us to use on the Saturday and Sunday. To date I think the following members will be attending: Saturday | Sunday | Antony(Me) | Antony (Me) | Tradgardmastre | Tradgardmastre | Davel | Davel | Mike | Mike | lotsoffigures1879 | lotsoffigures1879 (possibly) | Brian Cameron | Brian Cameron | spiritofethandune | spiritofethandune | greaterharlequin | greaterharlequin | macscrooge | macscrooge |
spiritofethandune and Cameron have offered to host a game and I am hoping to do so as well. I think we will look to play hosted/other games on the one day and have a big themed battle on the other day. What I would like to do over the coming weeks is firm up how we will run the weekend. Would we want to go out for dinner on the Saturday night? Antony

Hi, does anyone have any issues if I publicise the weekend on a couple of the FB pages - A Gentleman's War and HG Wells Little Wars to see if we can find any more players?

Go ahead - more the merrier. You've double-counted Anthony - he is also Spiritofethandune... I can also put on a game if one is needed. Mike

I was discussing rules with Antony (Antman1805) on the phone and wondered if we might not be better using Rebels and Patriots or similar rules for a large game? While I have enjoyed the Gentleman's War rules I did find the game fairly slow to play and we might want quicker rules for a large multiplayer game - or several games that interact across multiple tables.

Thanks Mike, duly edited. I have Bigger Battles (Wiley Games) on the way. As you say we want rules that are quick to get into, play quickly and allow us to finish the battle on the day.

Currently hors de combat with Covid but following with interest. Yes to wider publicity and yes to simpler rules. Perhaps Funny Little Wars with dice? Looking forward to the event greatly!

In terms of rules you could also use Stuart Asquith's "Big Wars" as they are simple and also one of the few sets explicitly designed for 54s!

I'm fairly agnostic on rules as long as there's an opportunity to have a read through beforehand.
I'd also suggest the option of one of Neil Thomas' rules - perhaps the set from Battlegames # 23 where units take hits rather than removing figures. The PDF is available on Wargames Vault.
Other games - yes, I did offer a game which is likely to be about 18th century smugglers as I've painted up the figures - proper big boys' toys in 54mm. I'm intending to do a test game in the next few games if I don't melt in the heat.

I have booked the Premier Inn, Stockport South for Anthony and I on the Friday and Saturday Night. Let us know if anyone else is staying there or is there Friday night?
It is 3 minutes walk from Element Games...
